Outrigger Waikiki

Beautiful Waikiki is a world class vacation spot. With miles of sparkling white sand and turquoise seas, outstanding dining and fun lounges, unbeatable shopping, and interesting historical sites, you'll have the time of your life in Waikiki. This two mile long area sits nestled along Oahu's sunny southern shore under the awesome profile of Diamond Head Crater.

Hike up to the top of Diamond Head for a fabulous view, paddle an outrigger canoe and catch some waves, and learn how to surf from the Waikiki Beach Boys. Sit on Waikiki Beach and watch a spectacular sunset while enjoying the soft strands of Hawaiian music. Catch the torch lighting ceremony and hula at Kuhio Beach.

White tee box, Hole #16! - Image Credit Curt Harris/COCONUT INFOOahu is home to some of Hawaii's best golf. From the mountains to the seashore Oahu boasts the widest variety of golfing experiences available in Hawaii. You can test your game on America's toughest golf course Ko'olau or enjoy the spectacular ocean view from The Turtle Bay Resort on The North Shore. There are mountain side courses with lush jungles to man made wonders featuring water on every hole.

By far the best thing about Oahu and Waikiki Beach is the vast array of choices for every traveler.

Stroll through Kapiolani Park and visit the Rose Garden, the Honolulu Zoo, and the Waikiki Aquarium. On Sundays, enjoy "Art in the Park" as you visit with the artists who hang their paintings and photographs on the Zoo fence. Shop the famous International Marketplace for exotic treasures and visit the great boutiques and shops along Kalakaua and Kuhio Avenues.

Indulge in an intimate dining experience in one of many world class restaurants in Waikiki or sit back and enjoy the beach scene from your seat in a fun, casual beachfront lounge. Dance the night away in an exciting nightclub and stroll home along the beach under thousands of stars.

Miles and miles of sandy white beaches await you on Oahu's incredible North Shore. Winter surf, typically from November to March, transforms the North Shore beaches into one of the world's most challenging surfing meccas. When the winter swells hit the North Shore, the surf rises and forms stupendous breakers and perfect tubes. Don't miss the excitement and thrills of professional winter surfing at Waimea Bay, Sunset Beach and Banzai Pipeline.

Summer brings calmness to North Shore surf and the smooth waters at Sunset Beach live up to their name by reflecting awesome sunsets. Shark's Cove at Pupukea Beach Park (between Waimea Bay and Sunset Beach) is famous for snorkeling. A marine conservation zone, the cove is filled with fish, seaweed, coral formations, and lava caves. And don't worry, despite the name, there aren't any sharks.

Explore charming Hale'iwa Town with its quaint shops, galleries, and restaurants. Stop by Matsumoto's store for the most famous shave ice on the island. And at Wyland's Gallery, you'll probably see his "painted dolphins" car parked out front. Not far from Hale'iwa, the sleepy town of Waialua boasts the old Sugar Mill (now a marketplace) and the unique Sugar Bar saloon.

Follow the road along past Mokuleia to mostly deserted white sandy beaches that stretch for miles. Pick a beach, have a picnic, explore the tidepools and enjoy the laid-back country atmosphere of the North Shore. For a little excitement, continue on to Dillingham Airfield, take a glider ride and soar high over the coastal mountains and the sea. The road ends at Kaena Point Nature Preserve. The island's point is a few miles walk down a dusty dirt road or you can stroll along the beach to the Kaena Point lighthouse.

Ko Olina has also been host to the LPGA Tour (1990-1995) and the Senior PGA Tour (1992). The course includes 16 water features on 8 different holes, multi-tiered greens, and well-manicured fairways. Ted Robinson, a designer best known for his "waterscapes," took former sugar cane lands and moved more than a million cubic yards of dirt to create Ko Olina. He added moundings and contours, elevated tees and greens, and planted more than a thousand stately coconut palms and other trees. And, true to his trademark, he added lots of water. Waterfalls feed into streams that widen into pools that become lakes From the back tees Ko Olina measures 6,867 yards and is superbly maintained, with wide fairways and well-bunkered, multi-tiered greens.

Luana Hills Country Club

From front nine to back nine you journey from wide open spaces on hillsides below the magic mountain of Olomana, to dense tropical jungle that showcases Hawaiian flora and birds. Located in the back of beautiful Maunawili Valley on the windward side of Oahu, Luana Hills Country Club is the first course in Hawaii designed by Perry Dye and his famous brother, Pete - one of the most accomplished golf architects in America. Luana Hills measures just 6,595 yards from the back tees, but its relatively modest length belies the challenge that lies ahead. The Dye brothers made sure to incorporate many of their trademark design features, including a variety of forced carries off the tee, bunkers bordered by railroad ties, par-3's over water to island greens, and fairways that fall off steeply into bunkers and ravines. Luana Hills is set in awesome natural surroundings beneath the deep green folds of the Ko'olau Mountains. The front nine plays across the lower slopes of Mount Olomana, while the back nine wends its way through a tropical rainforest with dramatic changes in elevation. Local residences refer to it as "Jurassic Park" because there are few signs of civilization, only the surrounding forest and the mountain peaks overhead.

Makaha Golf Course

Golfers will enjoy not only the challenging play but the beautifully landscaped links. Strutting peacocks and well-placed ponds, palm trees, and bougainvillea provide constant visual delights. The course takes full advantage of the natural splendors of the Makaha Valley, following the valley's graceful contours, and winding past fern-covered glens. The jewel- like course is framed by the Waianae Mountain Range, with the awesome Mt. Kaala, which rises almost vertically for more than 5,000 feet above the valley floor, visible from every hole. A long par-72 that stretches 7,077 yards from the back tees, the course is acclaimed as one of the finest in Hawaii. The Makaha Resort Golf Club is one of only three resorts on Oahu with golf courses, and was the first to be built. William P. Bell designed the championship course layout, in 1966. Since the Makaha Resort Golf Club opened, some holes have been altered from Bell's design to accommodate new construction, but the resulting holes are considered at least as good as the originals.
