Mauna Lani Resort rests on an ancient ‘ili, or land section, known through the centuries as Kalahuipua’a. It was a place where Kings would come for recreation and elders would gather for worship. This was, and is, a special hallowed place. The ancient royal fishponds are preserved on the grounds to this day. And if you somehow sense the importance of this setting as you stroll by them, you have the understanding for what the Hawaiians call The Spirit of Place. The resort is home to a variety of accommodation choices varied from luxury 5 star resort hotels to large town homes featuring golf views. The resort features several restaurants as well as shopping.

The two championship courses are unique and very different. The South is a seaside course with several stunning ocean front holes and The North is the tougher test inland with lava and sand traps to test the best golfers.

Mauna Kea Resort Course

Mauna Kea Resort Golf Course The multi-award winning Golf Course at Mauna Kea has since 1964, led the way in standards of course beauty and design, solidifying its place in Hawaii’s history as one of the most scenic and favored golf courses. Created by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., the 18-hole championship course presents dramatic changes in elevation, large undulating greens, and 120 well-placed bunkers. Without changing the essential character of his father’s design, Rees Jones Inc. re-planted the championship Course with highly efficient ultra-dwarf Tifeagle Bermudagrass on the greens and Tifway 419 hybrid Bermudagrass on the tees, fairways and roughs. State-of-the-art irrigation systems, liners in the bunkers, and advance drainage improvements keep the golf course in top shape and save on environmental resources. Including world-class practice facilities, that features a driving range and putting green to elevate your game while enjoying epic views of the Kohala Coast’s rolling waves. Golfers can also gather together at the new Number 3 Restaurant after golf to relax in a casual atmosphere, along with pupus and a cold one from the tap, or a signature Mauna Kea cocktail to toast a great round of golf. With incredible panoramic views of sea and land, featuring snow-capped Mauna Kea, rugged lava beds, and the sparkling blue Pacific. The spectacular signature hole is the famous Third Hole – where surging inlet water races to meet the rocky shoreline, affording one of the most dramatic and breathtaking views in golf today. Championship Tees: 18 Holes, Par 72, 7,370 Yards, Rated 77.2, Slope Rated 136

Mauna Lani Resort North Course

maunalaninorth.jpg Mauna Lani’s North Course has fast become one of the most popular tournament venues on the Island. Rated as one of the best golf experiences on the Big Island of Hawaii. Built on a lava bed, the North is characterized by rolling terrain punctuated by Kiawe forests. Number 17, is the North’s signature hole, par 3, measuring 140 yards, and requires a tee shot from an elevated tee to a green that is framed by a natural lava and a favorite “I was here” photo spot. A 230-acre protected archaeological district lies on the northern boundary of the golf course. Herds of feral goats frequent the entire golf course, moving from hole to hole throughout the day. There are as many as five different tee positions on most of the holes to give golfers a wide range of options in meeting the challenging conditions. With the Groves of twisted kiawe trees along the fairway edges and a more pronounced topography make the holes seem quite a contrast from the south 18. Water hazards come into play, and several holes are contiguous with the ocean. Championship Tees: 18 Holes, Par 72, 6,913 Yards, Rated 73.2, Slope Rated 136

Mauna Lani Resort South Course

mauna-lani.jpeg Mauna Lani’s South Course is home to Hole #15, one of the most photographed over-the-water golf course holes in the world. Renowned as the former home to the annual Senior Skins Game from 1990 – 2000, the course snakes through the stark, rugged a’a lava of the prehistoric Kaniku lava flow. The challenging South Course offers the golfer a panorama of mountain and ocean views. Fairways composed of Bermuda grass are lined by the natural rough along with pahoehoe and a’a lava rock. Lava rock must definitely be avoided as if you are lucky enough to have your ball bounce back to the fairway your ball will be damaged. Signature holes on the South Course that play beside the ocean are the famous Hole #15 and Hole #7, another par 3, borders the ocean and during the winter months golfers can enjoy watching humpback whales migrating offshore. Most of the greens are flat, but hard to determine the speed as there are many subtle breaks as you roll your ball to the flag. Championship Tees: Par 72, 6,938 Yards, Rated 72.8, Slope Rated 133

Waikoloa Resort Beach Course

beach3web.jpg Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., the Beach Course at Waikoloa winds its way along historic lava flows near Anaehoomalu Bay. From the fairway the player is treated to the most stunning views of any course in the world. The green fairways sit on a lava peninsula surrounded by swaying coconut palms. With beautiful visuals as a carpet of emerald green, contrasting against the stunning blues of the Pacific Ocean crashing on the black lava sending spray cascading in the air. The seventh is one of the most photographed holes in the entire Hawaiian Islands and a classic risk reward hole in every sense of the word. Hole # 17 is a wonderful par three over water surrounded by an amphitheater of black lava. Don’t forget your camera when playing this stunning course. Championship Tees: 18 Holes, Par 72, 6,577 Yards, Rated 71.6, Slope Rated 134

Waikoloa Resort Kings Course

kings9web.jpg The Kings’ course is truly a player’s course. It’s got the length, the strategic punishment or rewards and the ever-present trade winds to protect par. Yet, it can challenge the good player to the max while still being eminently enjoyable for the occasional player from several different sets of tees. Designed by the team of Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish the 7,074 yard Kings’ course meanders over and around the ancient black lava flow and its wide, undulating fairways are framed by palm trees and vibrant flowers of Hawaii. The beautiful Kings’ Course plays inland towards the ancient mountain of Mauna Kea, ever present in the distance. From the 5th hole green, perched up a few feet above the fairway you get a magnificent view of the surrounding lava fields, which stretch as far as the eye can see. This is camera time no matter what your score. Majestic fairways interspersed throughout ancient lava fields – it’s been likened to playing golf on the moon! Championship Tees: 18 Holes, Par 72, 7,074 Yards, Rated 73.4, Slope Rated 135<

Hapuna Resort Course

Hapuna’s challenging play and environmental sensitivity make it one of Hawaii’s most unique golf courses. Championship Tees: 18 Holes, Par 72, 6,875 Yards, Rated 73.3, Slope Rated 136

Kona CC Ocean Course

droneweb4.jpg The William Bell designed Ocean Course was built in 1966, and maintains its charm by incorporating natural settings along the Pacific Ocean and gorgeous mountain views. Being so close to the ocean you may even get sprayed by the ocean mist on picturesque ocean signature holes #3, #12 and #13. Enjoy seeing the grand splash on hole #13 where you will see the impressive blow hole known as “puka” in Hawaiian. Keep a lookout for Humpback Whales during November through March.
